One of the lasting memories from my first travels through South East Asia, was the variety of fresh fruit shakes on offer everywhere you go. Borneo and the Philippines had a few flavours available, but nothing like what I saw when I returned to Laos.
They’re so simple to make that it’s a shame they are not more available back home, but I suppose it’s the fruit at hand that makes the shakes of South East Asia so amazing. I had my favourite flavours to always return to, but it was treat to try something new when available. So if you’re a fresh fruit lover, the ticket to Laos will reach full value for money once you’ve tried a few of these! Just imagine fruit and ice and smoothness; not too watery and not too thick, just perfecto! All restaurants and stands have them, but the Delight House of Fruit Shakes has the best. Just to make your mouth water….
-watermelon
-mango
-mangosteen
-pineapple
-dragonfruit
-papaya
-banana
-starfruit
-lemon mint
-honeydew
-mangosteen, rambutan & lime
-lemon/lime/or orange
I did try a few veggie drinks (carrot/beetroot etc.), but was disappointed. It seemed to be the norm to add sugar-best to stick with the fruit!
Another good place to try out is the Fasay Fruit Shake Shop, Samsenthai St. opposite Asia Pavilion Hotel. Managed a recipe from them as well!!
Paradise in a Glass
- No sugar!
- 1 banana
- ½ medium carrot, chunked
- 1 long slice honeydew, chunked
- 5-6 big hunks watermelon
- ¼ cup ice (Not big cubes from your trays. Get small chunks the size of the tip of your index finger. Fasay’s ice was round with a hole in the middle. We think it makes a difference.)
Put all of the fruit in the blender and blend until smooth. (About forty-five seconds)
Leave the blender running and add the ¼ cup ice.
Blend another fifteen seconds, or until all ice is smoothed in.
Pour into a big, frosty glass and taste paradise!
