I’m a stripy kind of gal. My closet stuffed with shirts of brightly coloured thick and thin stripes is testament. So when walking down the street in Kuching, and my eye catches sunny yellows on top of mint greens on top of ruby reds, I’m intrigued. When the sales clerk named Lottie mentioned free cake samples, I was more intrigued. When my tastebuds were hit with sweet blueberry and smooth coffee flavours, I was a gonner. May I introduce Kek Lapis, the Malaysian Layer Cake.
It takes at least three hours to make each cake, and as much as a google search tells me I can make them at home with ease, I think it’s best left to the professionals. The colours are bright, the flavours are strong, and it’s hard to have just one slice. At $3 per cake, I squeezed three into my bag home as gifts.
I could have chosen from quite a variety of flavours (and colours of course) watermelon, strawberry chocolate, sweet and sour, coffee, mint, lemon, blueberry, biscuit cheesecake etc. etc..
It’s a no brainer to those who know me which flavours I chose! One didn’t make it home.
